Olympic long-distance runner and Runsafer founder Todd Williams shares some of his running safety tips to help you go the extra mile — safely!
1. SAFETY NAME
If a stranger approached you and you feel in danger, start yelling a name and acting like someone is in the area. If you can get out of a possible dangerous situation before having to physically fight by using your words then it's a win-win.
2. POWER IN NUMBERS
Try to be in populated areas at all times. Attacks and assaults occur most of the time when individuals are alone and are targeted.
3. RUNNING SPECIALTY STORES
Find running specialty stores in your area to use a resource for your personal safety. They will point you in the right direction to safe parks, trails and routes to keep you safer while being active.
4. USING YOUR SMARTPHONE
Use apps like Wearsafe to keep you safer, but always be aware when on your phone and don't become complacent while starting down at your screen.
5. OPEN EARS
When wearing headphones, keep the volume down so you can hear everything around you. If you rmusic is blaring, someone could sneak up on you before you have a chance to react.
6. PARKING YOUR CAR
Take an extra 20 seconds of time and make sure nothing suspicious is going around your vehicle. Keep your doors locked and make sure you're safe to exit before being on your way.
7. EYES UP, SPEAK UP
When out excersising, keep your phone in your pocket or arm-band and keep your eyes up for your safety. If you see something that isn't right, don't be afriad to speak up or call 911.
8. IT'S ALL ABOUT ATTITUDE
If you're attacked, be prepared to do whatever it takes to get our of the situation. Your mindset mut be "I will not loose!".
9. DON'T BE COMPLACENT
Have a strategy and a plan for your home, workplace or anywhere else where safety could be a possible concern. Do you and your loved oens know what do in case of an emergency?
