We set out Tuesday morning on a mission. Our mission? To pass out 217 Tags on the streets of Times Square in less than an hour, in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Did we do it? You bet we did. In fact, our journey to NYC exceeded our expectations. See our video.
We all had an idea of what Tuesday would entail. We predicted that our train might run a little late, that we would be just a little cold in that lovely 30° April weather, and that we would all definitely be craving a big slice of New York pizza by the end of the day. But something else happened in Times Square that we did not expect.
What we didn’t predict was the overwhelmingly positive response that we received from hundreds of individuals on the city streets of Times Square. Let me tell you– that was what made this Tuesday the incredible that experience it was. And the best part? Our team not only approached the crowds, but as the hour went on, to our surprise we actually had people start to approach us. As we continued to explain #zeroperhour and the statistics that surround it, the more people wanted to know who we are and understand why we were there.
As you can assume, each of us met a variety of individuals in an hour on the streets of New York City. Personally, I had the the opportunity to speak with everyone from parents, to security guards, to travelers and to even a group of students from all the way from University of Arizona! All of which walked away with Tags in hand, as they continued on their own day’s journey, excited to share with friends and family. I know I can speak for the whole team when I say how incredibly moving it was to see so many people interested in what we had to say and how they all understood the need for change.
A big thank you to everyone who was a part of the day, and to Purplethread for coming out with us and for all of the other great things that you do to make a difference. As we continue to innovate and spread awareness, we hope to see those numbers drop. Join us, and together let's make it #zeroperhour!
